  • The NRP Provider course requirements include an online exam, skills evaluation, and simulation and debriefing.

The NRP 8th edition suggests the use of two course formats, suitable for Essentials and Advanced learners.

Provider Course Format #1: Sequential Practice and Evaluation

    • This format is most appropriate for new NRP learners and those who infrequently use NRP Essentials or Advanced skills.
    • In this format, learners will sequentially review and practice the skills from each lesson within the Essentials or Advanced curriculum with the instructor.
    • At the end of each lesson, the instructor uses the NRP Practice Scenarios in the textbook to evaluate the learner’s ability to lead their team through the resuscitation in the correct sequence and perform the relevant technical skills. Each Practice Scenario builds on the knowledge and skills from previous lessons, giving the instructor an opportunity to observe each learner lead their team through a series of scenarios of increasing complexity.
    • When the learner has completed all Practice Scenarios in their course without requiring significant corrections/coaching, they have successfully passed the final component of evaluation in the NRP Provider Course and may proceed to Simulation and Debriefing.

Provider Course Format #2: Comprehensive Skills Test (“test out”)

    • Provider Course participants who resuscitate newborns frequently and are experts at resuscitation (Essentials or Advanced skills) may “test out” of the sequential practice and evaluation course by leading their team of participants (who are probably also testing out) through at least one NRP algorithm sequence and performing role-relevant skills.
    • The Comprehensive Skills Test requires a team resuscitation and is not a one-person “check-off.”
    • Testing out of complex resuscitation skills is not appropriate for health care professionals who rarely participate in complex resuscitation. In hospitals where complex resuscitation is an uncommon occurrence, it is possible that no one will be eligible to test out of the skills in Lessons 5 through 7.
    • Learners who successfully “test out” have passed the final evaluation point of the NRP Provider Course and may proceed to Simulation and Debriefing.
    • Learners who make significant errors and require coaching during the scenario(s) should be directed to their hospital NRP remediation plan or to the Provider Course that uses the sequential practice and evaluation format.
    • This format is not designed to be a “short course.” For expert resuscitators who test out, the simulation and debriefing component is an opportunity to practice challenging scenarios that require critical thinking and effective teamwork and communication. What scenarios do they find most stressful? What NRP Key Behavioral Skills are lacking in clinical practice? Simulation and Debriefing is the safe place to take on these challenges.

NRP instructors are not required to offer the Comprehensive Skills Test (Testing Out) format.

  • Learners should print a copy of their Part 1 completion certificate and bring it to the Instructor-led Event to prove that they have met the requirement of completing the online component before participating in the in-person class. This will also confirm whether they are taking the Essentials or Advanced curriculum.

  • Sample agendas for the Instructor-led Events can be found in the Instructor Toolkit. All active NRP instructors have a link to the toolkit under Quick Links in their account in the 8th edition Learning Platform.

  • We recommend one instructor for every 4 students in an Instructor-led Event.

  • The NRP course agenda varies, depending on the number of Providers in the event and how much time each individual requires to complete the event, the number of Instructors available and available resources, such as classroom space and quantity of NRP supplies and equipment, including newborn manikins. Events can be from 3 to 4 hours in length.

Please note: Providers may require more or less course time.

  • As a general rule, Providers must complete Part 1 before attending an Instructor-led Event. Instructors who deny admission to Providers who have not successfully passed the online exam will enjoy the benefit of Providers who are prepared to spend course time with hands-on skills and simulation training.

Health care professionals who are inexperienced perinatal or neonatal providers will have difficulty with hands-on skills and resuscitation scenarios if the online component has not been completed as part of the course learning. They should not be admitted to the Instructor-led Event as a participant.

  • Only an instructor who is listed on the Instructor-led Event can grade it. They will select either Pass, Fail, or No-Show for each learner.

  • Instructors can select "Cross-Organization" to allow the course to be accessible to all NRP Providers.

For example, if an Instructor or administrator creates the event through their institutional account and would like to allow students outside their institution to attend the event, select "Cross-Organization" to allow access to the event.

  • A long-distance approach may seem beneficial in some instances (for example, those in rural areas, those who have difficulty identifying a local instructor); however, at this time, the hands-on portion of the NRP provider course must still be taught in-person. Technical and behavioral skills are not assessed in an online format, and those are the crux of what is learned and assessed in the face-to-face component of NRP. At the present time, there is no easy way to create truly immersive scenarios in a virtual manner and provide the learner with feedback on their skills (especially behavioral skills).

In general, meetings over Skype or by teleconference tend to be less engaging than those conducted in person – and when there is an element of both teaching and evaluation, the Skype or teleconference format becomes even more difficult. Demonstrating a particular skill, for example, applying the mask to the face for PPV or assessing chest compressions, is much more difficult when the instructor must depend on the camera angle for a good view. Instructor assessment of learner performance is already highly subjective and highly variable and watching the learner perform through a camera tends to compound this problem.

The interaction with the instructor during the Provider course cannot yet be replicated through online/long distance learning. As technology improves and more is learned about the education methodology of distance learning, it is possible that NRP may be offered in this way at some point in the future.

  • NRP Instructors schedule their own classes. There are over 20,000 instructors nationwide. The NRP Learning Platform provides a master calendar of Instructor-led events on which Instructors can add their event. Once you start the online learning assessment portion of the provider curriculum, you will be prompted to "Register for Event." Clicking on this will take you to the master calendar where you can filter by location to show all of the available events in your area.

Please note, some events are intended for hospital employees only, at the discretion of the hospitals and the instructors. We recommend you reach out to the instructor prior to the event to confirm you are able to attend.

If you have difficulty locating an Instructor-led Event through this search feature, you can email nrp@aap.org with your contact information, city, and state. We will forward your request to instructors in your area to see if they can assist in locating an event you can attend.
