What does a tapered roller bearing do? ›

Tapered Roller Bearings are designed to reduce friction and, in turn, reduce the heat that can cause bearing structures to fail. This bearing is used in many industrial applications and is optimal for those undergoing excess loads.

Double row tapered roller bearings are typically used in gearboxes, hoisting equipment, rolling mills and machines in the mining industry. Four row tapered roller bearings are used almost exclusively in work roll applications such as rolling mills.

The tapered design allows for effective distribution of loads across the bearing, making them ideal for heavy-load applications. Spherical Roller Bearings: These bearings are primarily designed for high radial loads with a moderate level of axial loads.

Axial preload in tapered roller bearings is produced by displacing one bearing ring axially in relation to the other by an amount corresponding to the desired preload force. Generally, each bearing is individually and manually adjusted using shims or spacer sleeves, or by tightening torques.

Generally, the ideal operating bearing setting is near- zero to maximize bearing life. Most bearings are set with a cold setting of end play at assembly. This comes as close as possible to the desired near-zero setting when the unit reaches its stabilized operating temperature.

Despite the benefits provided by tapered roller bearings, disadvantages do exist. These bearings have speed limitations and are very sensitive to misalignment, so engineers should consider other types of bearings for applications with high misalignment or high-speed requirements.

Separable bearings such as tapered roller bearings may be checked by individually examining their rolling elements and the outer ring raceway. Large bearings cannot be rotated manually; however, the rolling elements, raceway surfaces, cages, and contact surface of the ribs should be carefully examined visually.
